Without fail, the most popular question when returning home from a trip to Italy is, "OMG, how was the food?" I have been asked that same question many a times upon returning home from a trip there. Everyone - from close family members, to acquaintances - just has to know if the food is realllllly that good! Although I have heard some stories where people have been disappointed in their culinary picks while traveling in Italy, I can't say the same. I L-O-V-E the food in Italy. In fact, I dream of the food in Italy - the fresh tomatoes, the savory olive oil, the flavors that burst in your mouth...
Can you feel your mouth watering yet? I sure can!
While in Florence, my focus was on savoring authentically local and fairly budget-friendly cuisine. I tried my best to seek out eateries frequented by locals, the ones slightly off -the-beaten path, but also beloved by visitors. I know, it's a lot to ask, but with a month at my disposal I was determined to find the best. Prior to my travels (as I often do), I dedicate a fair amount of time researching restaurants, cafes and other eateries. Mostly because I want to ensure that every culinary experience is excellent and not a 'waste' in any way - by the way, does anyone else feel the stress of having to have an incredible meal every. single. time? If yes, you are my people!
The research truly paid off because I wasn't disappointed in a single meal while in Florence. The pasta was fresh, the pizza was hot and I was one very happy girl! Plus, I didn't break the bank, which is a huge bonus!
Below, I present my list of my top 5 eats in Florence. With hundreds of restaurants in Florence, I'm certain I missed out on some truly incredible ones - I regret not being able to visit every place that I had hoped to. Nevertheless, these handpicked favorites left a lasting impression, capturing not only my heart, but, more importantly, my taste buds!
By the way, if you have been to Florence, I would love to know your favorite places to grab a bite! I'll add your suggestions to my on going list for next time. ;)
Gustapizza
Located in the charming Santo Spirito neighborhood of Florence, Gustapizza is probably one of Florence's most popular pizza eateries and it is worth the hype! The pizza is good and super affordable - 8 euros for a Margherita pie...yes, please! If you swing by during lunch time, expect a line to sit at a table to eat as the restaurant does not accept reservations. My recommendation? Grab a pie to go and make your way to the nearby church, where you can sit on the steps to enjoy it. The pizza was everything you would want in a Neapolitan style pie - a tasty dough, not over cooked, a yummy sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese. Simple, yet perfect and Gustapizza nails it!
Antico Noè
Nestled in an arcaded alley off of Piazza San Pier Maggiore, Antico Noè is a true Florentine treasure. When dining in the alleyway, you feel like you are stumbling upon a well-kept secret, a hidden gem of a restaurant that serves incredible food. The handwritten menu, subject to change, evokes a sense of personalized culinary craftsmanship, like the chef wants to serve some of his favorite dishes just to you. Okay, I may be romanticizing this a bit...My experience here was SO good, I went not only once, but twice during my stay - once with a friend, and then with my family when they came to visit. As you can see, my nephew approved of the choice. Unfortunately, I didn't snap any pictures of the food, as it was devoured too fast to do so. Nevertheless, take my word for it - GO!
Acqua Al 2
Let me tell you, Acqua Al 2 was on my list of restaurants since the start of my trip based on a recommendation I received from a friend, but I waited until my final night in Florence to go so that I could bring my family along and I kind of wish I didn't...only so I could have enjoyed it more than once! Florence is renowned for its colossal Florentine steak, a hearty piece of meet that is meant to shared among a few people (or just among yourself if you are feeling ambitious). However, it was simply too much for me, but the blueberry steak at Aqua Al 2 was not! The thought of the blueberry steak peaked my interest and I must say, it was divine - the steak was tender and the sauce was chef's kiss delicious! Not what you would necessarily expect on a menu in Italy but oh, SO good! Something to note is that the restaurant does take reservations, but I think it's more of a "suggested arrival time" because we did end up waiting for a table for about an hour after our reservation time, so plan accordingly.
I'cche C'e C'e
I'cche C'e C'e (translated as "What there is, there is" ) came highly recommended by of one of the instructors at the Italian school I had the pleasure of attending (but more on that later). With his assurance that it was one of his favorite restaurants in Florence, it immediately got added to my list. Located near Santa Croce, this quaint restaurant was a bit off-the-beaten-path, an automatic win from me. A popular dish I yearned to try while I was in the city was the Tuscan classic "Pappa al Pomodoro" which is essentially a tomato and bread soup. Upon seeing this dish on the menu, I knew I had to order it, and I was not disappointed. Another simple, yet delish dish! It was piping hot and bursting with flavor - a perfect combo for a brisk night in Florence.
Mercato Centrale
My last Florence top eats might be a little bit of a cheat as it is actually the renowned Mercato Centrale. Located in the San Lorenzo district, on the second floor of this historical indoor site is an INCREDIBLE food hall, brimming with an array drool-worthy food stalls. If you find yourself hungry and want to sample an assortment of different dishes, or maybe you want a quick meal, this is the place for you! From freshly crafted pasta to mouthwatering pizzas in both Neapolitan and Pizza al Taglio (pizza by the slice) styles, the options are endless. But that's not all as you can also embark on a global culinary journey with offerings ranging from sushi and American BBQ to seafood, deserts and even a well-stocked bar (perfect if you want to sample from Tuscan vino). I like to think of the Mercato Centrale as a foodies paradise. It's a must visit if you are heading to Florence!
Since I had the opportunity to try so many restaurants in Florence, I had to include some honorable mentions as well:
Located near Santa Croce, great pizza!
Located in Santo Spirito right near Gusta Pizza - delicious fresh pasta!
Incredible sandwich shop, skip All'Antico Vinaio and go here instead. Located near Piazza della Signoria.
My first meal in Florence was here, so I may be a bit biased but the Bolognese was fantastic! Located near Santa Croce.
Located in the San Lorenzo district, close to the Mercato Centrale. Definitely more of a tourist destination than a local hot spot, but the food was excellent and the atmosphere was fun. Make a reservation if you can, it gets busy and there's often times a line!
