You know what they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! I wholeheartedly embraced this old adage and took it upon myself to make sure that I indulged myself each day with the best, most nutritious breakfast I could lay my hands on - a pastry and cappuccino. ;) When in Florence...
If I am being honest, I did eat breakfast at home almost everyday, but I also rewarded myself with a mid-morning "snack" or "second breakfast" if you wish, at a many of the charming cafes around the city. My criteria for selecting a place was fairly simple: did the spot have an inviting ambiance and menu filled with something sweet? Lucky for me, that is not too hard to find in a city like Florence!
Should you ever find yourself in Florence, which I hope you do, make a note to include one or all of these 5 spots on your list of places to grab the best breakfast:
Ditta Artigianale
Ditta Artigianale has a few locations throughout the city, but the one closest to me was nestled near the charming Piazza Sant'Ambrogio. With an array of breakfast items, and welcoming to both locals and tourists, this cafe ensured that there was something to delight every taste bud. I opted for the yogurt bowl with homemade granola but the options extended to an array of pastries, breads, and smoothies. As a bonus, Ditto Artigianale transforms into a great place to grab an aperativo in the evening as well! Overall, just a cool, inviting atmosphere all day and night long!
Rivarno Café
Located along the Arno River near the Santa Croce neighborhood, you'll find the Rivarno Café, another great spot! I loved how it was tucked into a quiet corner along the river with great outdoor seating in a small alleyway. Plus, I was also drawn to its menu offerings - simple, delicious food such as quiche, croissant sandwiches, and of course sweet treats like the muffin above!
Melaleuca bakery + bistro
Located just down the street from Rivarno, Melaleuca bakery +bistro is a gem! Woman-owned, this spot was always bustling! The everyday menu is great with egg dishes and avocado toast, but there are also lots of sweet treats to choose from in the display case like banana bread, Pain au Chocolat and yummy cakes. You'll definitely drool over the cinnamon buns like I did - a MUST try if you go. They also offer a brunch on the weekend which adds dishes such as pancakes to the menu! It's small, but you move in and out quickly, so if there is a wait, stay!
La Menagerie
Looking like something straight out of a design magazine, La Menagerie is a destination that's an absolute must-visit, even if for the photos alone! Step inside and you'll find a shop filled with beautiful goods, an alluring bar and captivating decor practically begging to be photographed. Outdoors, there is plenty of seating with perfect people watching views and more photo backdrops. This café/restaurant offers a perfect blend of Florence's historical traditions with a vibrant modern feel right in the heart of Florence. You can also find lunch and dinner menus as well as delectable cocktails, so stop by at any point in the day to indulge!
Ghibellina Forno
My number one go to spot for savoring my most beloved pastry, a pistachio cornetto, was Ghibellina Forno, also in the Santa Croce neighborhood. This pasteccheria was my #1 go-to spot my entire trip. You'll know this if you read my Top 10 Florence Favorites blog. Would you believe me when I say this heavenly combo set me back me less than 3 euros?! And the quality couldn't be beat! The bakery offers so many delectable options like cookies, breads, and other pastries, too. Order a cappuccino at the counter and enjoy before heading out to explore the city!
The breakfast places above look absolutely amazing!
